MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Though winter is settling in, fresh, organic food is still available in Mamaroneck through Down to Earth Markets.
Down to Earth Markets gives people the chance to purchase organic foods from beef to fish to fresh produce. Setting up at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Saturday morning, vendors from across the region gathered to offer products not commonly found in local supermarkets.
“You’re getting fresher food here,” said market manager Michelle Avon. “You can literally taste the difference, which is significant. I bought celery at a farmers market and was blown away. It sounds silly, but buying from here helped me understand what celery is supposed to taste like. In the supermarket you tend to get something with little flavor.”
Avon said that not only does the market give farmers a chance to sell their products, it provides a chance for the community to gather. She said it also gives communities a chance to support the environment and to interact with people they wouldn’t necessarily meet.
“We offer people a chance to try new things they never tried before,” Avon said. “You might not necessarily find this stuff being sold at a supermarket. It gives people a chance to experiment, if they are up to the challenge. We had someone buy a whole chicken who never cooked one before just to try it.”
Denise Sarsorito, marketing director for Down to Earth Markets, said the market caters to specific tastes of people. Having been involved with the market for six months, Sarsorito said it gives people living in the Sound Shore area a chance to experience food grown upstate without having to travel there.
“I’ve heard several comments about how we had a two- to three-week hiatus and they missed us,” Sarsorito said. “It’s a way to serve our loyal customers during the winter months.”
Down to Earth Markets also operates in Ossining and the Park Slope section of Brooklyn during the winter. For more information visit its website or call 914-923-4837.
