MAMARONECK, N.Y. --The tagline at the The Larchmont-Mamaroneck Center for Continuing Education is “Take A Different Course." And, since Blythe Hamer took over as Executive Director last February, the Center has seemingly taken that motto to heart.

The Mamaroneck resident introduced 60 new courses this Fall, out of a total of 145. Among the new classes: The Art of the Cocktail, College Essay Writing, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, and Poker for Beginners, making for what Hamer calls "an alternative to a humdrum weekday evening in the 'burbs."

Starting in January the Center will be offering new Career Development classes such as Job Search Boot Camp for Millennials, as well as a three-part series on getting the most out of LinkedIn. And, it's expanding its day trips to Manhattan.

Also new: A  "Notable Neighbors" series -- former U.S. Treasury Secretary (and Larchmont resident) Timothy Geithner  -- spoke at the first one in  September and drew more than 700 people.

And just launched: A Community Advisor Network (CAN) with the goal of gathering input from a variety of community members to ensure programming reflects the diverse needs of the community.

Hamer, who previously worked in marketing at American Express, Oxford Health Plans and Gerson Lehrman Group among her many area volunteer positions (her three kids went to the public schools) says this job combines her broad-based business background with a particular skill set in communicating, coupled with her knowledge of and love for the community.

"Personally, I usually have the most fun when I’m doing something that stretches me a bit, either intellectually or artistically, with like-minded people," said Hamer. "So my goal is to create plenty of those opportunities for everyone to participate in."

She said the teachers -- most of whom live locally -- are the core of the program, and she's working hard to ensure that everyone is not only highly accomplished in his or her field, but that they love teaching and have the ability to impart their enthusiasm to their students.

Among the instructors: Former MHS teacher, Mike DiGennaro, who teaches college essay writing and independent film; Jill Marshall, who is a Gold Life Master in Bridge; opera teacher Eric Jennings, who sang professionally as a tenor around the world; former New York Times editor Joan Motyka, who teaches Memoir Writing; and RISD-educated oil painting instructor Kristin Osterberg McElroy.
