Life's A Basket Full Of Fun For Armonk Mother Daughter Duo

ARMONK, N.Y. -- Jennifer Colonna never thought she'd be working with her mother. But, after spending her college years helping out with social media marketing for Bedford-based Tasteful Treats & Treasures, a gift basket company, it just made sense.

"I definitely thought I'd have a different track," said Jennifer, "But after doing all this marketing for my mom, it piqued my interest and made me realize I like doing this."

For Rose Colonna,  who started the business in 2003 when Jennifer was going to college, it was a relief. "Jennifer was interested in doing all the things I wasn't," she said. "So we really complement each other."

Today the two women practically finish each other's sentences and do a lot of laughing. "We each have our own roles which is why I think working together works so well for us," said Rose.

"I like to say I'm front of the house and she's back of the house," said Jennifer.

The business first started with Rose, who both call "the crafty one" working out of her Armonk home but then, when the baskets and boxes started overtaking the house, she realized -- "I insisted," interjected Jennifer  -- she needed a separate space.

That was in 2006 and the business, which also employs two other women (one of which is the mom of Jennifer's past teammate on the swim team) continues to grow.

The company recently implemented a fundraising program to benefit non-profits and charitable organizations with "Our Treats Gives Back."

"We like to think what makes us different from other companies is that we're local," said Jennifer who also lives in Armonk. "We support the community."

Plus, she said, everything is customized and personalized. "When you call us, you'll either talk to my mom or to me or both," she said. "We keep our customers in mind all the time. This business truly is a labor of love."

And yes, that means often business mixes with pleasure, especially around big holidays when the two can work for days on end. "We usually celebrate all major holidays the day or two after the actual event," said Rose.

As for Mother's Day, the two hope to go on a hike. "We like to be outdoors," said Jennifer. "On a nice Saturday or Sunday, we shut down and go for a walk."
