Mamaroneck Smashburger Fills Empty Space And Bellies

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Smashburger opened its doors Wednesday morning to a hungry group of villagers looking for a bite to eat in the once-vacant retail location at Mamaroneck and Halstead avenues.

“It’s very good and the prices seem to be good,” said Mike Petrocelli, a Connecticut resident who works in New York. “I just saw the signs and I like different burger places, so I figured I would give it a try.”

Smashburger, 448 Mamaroneck Ave., is one of the first businesses to greet drivers  traveling underneath the Metro-North Bridge. The location was vacant for a little over a year, according to the property’s landlord, John Manouselis, who drove more than an hour to New Jersey to test Smashburger’s products before considering them for the space.

“Everybody is pretty excited. We are lucky to have them as a tenant and I am looking forward to having a long-lasting relationship with them,” he said.

The restaurant offers table service after the customer orders from the counter.

“We call it fast-casual,” said owner Eric Portnoy. “It’s quick but you are getting served."

Smashburger opened at 10 a.m. and, by 11 a.m., more than 35 people had already been served.

“It’s been vacant for so long that to see something like this coming in is very cool,” said Monica Friedman of Larchmont, who was eating lunch with her daughter.

Her daughter, who’s boyfriend also works at the location, agreed.

“It seems like a good place to eat. It’s fast, but it’s also healthy and it’s a great use of the space,” Julie Friedman said as she started eating a Classic Chicken Sandwich.

Smashburger is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The menu can be found online at http://smashburger.com/
