MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Larchmont resident Daniel Scopp, a former paratrooper in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), will speak at a screening of the documentary, "Beneath the Helmet: From High School to the Home Front," on Wednesday, April 13 at the Westchester Jewish Center (WJC) in Mamaroneck.

The film gives an intimate look at young Israelis as they transition from students to soldiers and Scopp said he hopes viewers will walk away from the movie with a greater understanding of what it means to be a soldier in the IDF.

"Most Israelis will be drafted into the army right after high school and within a short amount of time, they will find themselves actively defending their country," he said. "As we see in the movie, for soldiers in a combat unit, the training they must endure is grueling and is designed to prepare them physically and mentally for war. It’s hard for us in the U.S. to imagine what it must be like serving in the army and being given such great responsibility at a young age."

Scopp, who recently returned to Larchmont after years in Israel and Canada, will share his experience in basic training and as a paratrooper both before and after the movie.

Admission is $10. Proceeds (in excess of costs) will be donated to the Lone Soldier Center in Israel, a nonprofit organization dedicated to meeting the physical and social needs of soldiers serving without families in Israel.

Light refreshments will be served. The event is sponsored the Westchester Jewish Center’s Israel Committee and begins at 7:30 p.m. at 175 Rockland Avenue, Mamaroneck.
