Firefighters found a "heavy" fire in Apt. A-8 at 107 East Mark St., when they arrived on scene and began an aggressive attack to try and contain the flames to the single apartment, Wilcha said.
Hyde Park and Fairview firefighters managed to contain the fire damage to the one apartment, with eight other units receiving heat and smoke damage, he added.
Several residents were treated by the Northern Dutchess Paramedics for burns, smoke inhalation, difficulty breathing, and for an asthma attack. One resident was transported to the hospital with first and second-degree burns, Wilcha said.
The Hyde Park Fire Department was assisted by Fairview, Staatsburg, City of Poughkeepsie and Roosevelt firefighters.
The entire building is shut down as an investigation is being conducted by the Dutchess County Fire Division.
The local Red Cross is helping residents with temporary housing and other needs.
