Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued For Parts Of Long Island, 60 MPH Winds Possible

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is now in effect for much of the region, including parts of Long Island, as a new round of storms is expected to roll through with damaging winds and isolated tornadoes possible.

The watch went into effect Thursday, July 21 at 1:15 p.m. and lasts until 8 p.m. It currently covers Nassau County, but has not been issued for Suffolk County.

At 1:17 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located over the Bronx, moving east at 30 miles per hour, the National Weather Service said.

Golf ball-size hail and 60 mph wind gusts are possible, along with up to ping-pong ball-size hail is possible.

"People and animals outdoors will be injured," the weather service said. "Expect hail damage to roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles. Expect wind damage to trees and power lines."

"Heavy downpours are likely in storms, which could lead to urban and poor drainage flooding and possibly isolated flash flooding," the National Weather Service added.
