Springfield Police Officer Busted On Drugs, Gun Charges

A Springfield police officer was arrested on Wednesday, Dec. 13, after an early morning raid on a home in the city, authorities said.

Miranda Caldwell, 26, who has been with the department since 2021, was charged with several felonies following the bust, Springfield police said. Anthony Tavernier, 24, was also arrested. 

Officers raided the home in the 300 block of Nottingham St. just before 7 a.m. and seized an illegal firearm, 10 bags of heroin, 10 grams of cocaine, and 100 grams of marijuana, police said. 

Springfield Police Superintendent Cheryl Clapprood plans to suspend Caldwell for five days without pay, the harshest penalty she can divvy out, according to police spokesman Ryan Walsh. 

Officials notified the state's Peace Officer Standards and Training board of the arrest. The agency could suspend or pull her license. 

Caldwell is charged with: 

  • Improper storage of a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony
  • Possession of a defaced firearm during the commission of a felony
  • Possession with the intent to distribute a Class A drug
  • Possession with the intent to distribute a Class B drug
  • Possession with the intent to distribute a Class D drug
  • Reckless endangerment of a child

Tavernier is charged with: 

  • Improper storage of a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm without a license
  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony
  • Possession of ammunition without an FID card
  • Possession of a defaced firearm during the commission of a felony
  • Possession with the intent to distribute a Class A drug
  • Possession with the intent to distribute a Class B drug
  • Possession with the intent to distribute a Class D drug
  • Reckless endangerment of a child

Massachusetts State Police were involved in the investigation and the raid, authorities said. Their mugshots will be released after they are arraigned, Walsh said.
