Honor The Planet At Westchester's Myriad Earth Day Events

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Are you ready for Earth Day, Westchester? There are a myriad of events going on around the county as a way to support and educate folks about environmental protection. Here's a sampling. You can also find more at www.earthday.org/.

Friday, April 22

  • Those ages three to seven can enjoy an "Earth Day Extravaganza" at the Rye Nature Center (873 Boston Post Rd, Rye) starting at 10 a.m. Enjoy Earth Day crafts, a hike within the local FRNC forest and an animal superhero show. Event ends at noon.
  • Get your green degree by attending a day-long symposium at Purchase College-SUNY from 9 a.m.to 5 p.m. Here, you'll learn about water and class struggle. The free event features a moderator, international scholars and open discussion at Neuberger Museum of Art Study. Go HERE for details. 
  • Still unsure what to do on Earth Day? Take time out from errands to pledge your sustainability goals on the Trees of Hope at White Plains' City Center 15: Cinema de Lux. Better yet, have your kids do it. Visit www.wpbid.com/ for more information.
  • Feel like a drive? Celebrate the opening of a new outdoor learning and activity area at a special ceremony at noon, on the shores of Hessian Lake at Bear Mountain State Park. The exhibit which includes educational and interpretive signs, hands-on displays and activity stations, informs visitors about the trail’s origins and allows users to experience trail features such as bog bridges, turnpike, coping stones, crib walls, and step construction.
Saturday, April 23
  • In recognition of Earth Day, Jefferson Valley Mall in Yorktown Heights is hosting an educational indoor event meant for the entire family. Children will learn how to plant and grow seedlings with help from Stuart’s Fruit Farm and will have the opportunity to interact with live animals. The festivities start at noon and end at 1:30 p.m. Head to the mall's Center Court at 650 Lee Boulevard.
  • Earth Day services will be held at 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Yorktown (2880 Crompond Rd, Yorktown Heights) led by your GreenFaith team.

Saturday, May 7

  • No experience is necessary for the day-long clean up (9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.) of the Od Croton Aqueduct trail. Volunteers will remove invasive bushes, pick up trash and learn how to identify targeted invasive species by either pruning or pulling them up. Go to www.ptny.wufoo.com/ to register. 
  • Head to Kensico Dam for green exhibits, live entertainment, a farmers market, children’s activities and Sustainability/Recycling Awards presented by Westchester County. Details: 1 Bronx River Parkway in Valhalla, www.westchestergov.com/.
