MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Mamaroneck is hosting the 8th annual Hounds on the Sound Dog Walk & Festival Sunday, Oct. 9. The family-friendly event invites dogs to enjoy the festivities at a local park and raises money for local shelters.

Hundreds of walkers and their dogs will take a leisurely stroll around the perimeter of Harbor Island Park. Walkers can get pledges of support from family and friends or simply show up to walk and pay the $25 registration fee. The fee is $40 for a family.

All walkers will receive bandanas for up to two dogs, and walkers who raise $100 or more will get a Hounds on the Sound T-shirt.

The current top fundraiser is Dianne Heim, who's walking in memory of her dog Lucy, who you can see here.

The event is a fundraiser for the Humane Society of Westchester, Pet Rescue and the Friends of Mount Vernon Shelter Animals , a group that helps offset costs not included in the city budget for that shelter.

Dogs and cats also will be be available for adoption.

The festivities are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the dog walk starting at 11:30 a.m. Other festival activities include browsing the wares of numerous vendors -- many who are dog-centric, listening to music, and enjoying refreshments like pizza, burgers, hot dogs from Walter's and home-baked treats.

You also can get a take-home photo of you and your dog posing at the water's edge or a balloon shaped like a dog, buy raffle tickets, and enjoy face painting and crafts for the kids. You can also run your dog through an agility course with a professional trainer.

New this year are dog contests, including best costume, best trick and best kisser. There's a $10 entry fee for the first contest and $5 for each additional one.
