Kate Regan Case Again Continued to Jan. 31

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – A New Canaan woman accused of hitting a man in her vehicle and driving away won't return to Norwalk Superior Court until early next year as her lawyers attempt to head off a trial.

Kate Regan was granted a continuance of her case until Jan. 31 by Judge Bruce Hudock. Regan is charged with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle and evading responsibility resulting in physical injury or death.

New Canaan Police said Regan’s sport-utility vehicle struck 82-year-old Krishna S. Jayaraman on the afternoon of Aug. 18, 2010, as Jayaraman was at his mailbox outside his home on Oenoke Ridge Road. Jayaraman died at Norwalk Hospital after suffering “multiple traumatic blunt injuries.”

Regan was arrested Nov. 3, 2010, following a nearly three-month investigation by town police and the State Police Major Crime Unit. Regan pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Regan's attorney, Christian Young, said Monday that her legal team has nearly completed its investigation and is interested in having the case settled before it goes to a trial. “We want to see if it can be resolved without the need for a trial before a jury,” he said. Young said Regan’s representatives have been in contact with Fred Ury, the attorney representing the Jayaraman estate.

Jayaraman’s family has also filed a civil suit against Regan and her husband, Michael, in Stamford Superior Court.
