Irvington Middle School Students Learn Lifesaving Skills

IRVINGTON, N.Y. -- Irvington Middle School students recently knelt on the floor during their health classes to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR, to their “patients” who, in this case, were mannequins.

The lifesaving lesson was part of the eighth-grade wellness unit in health teacher Luann Ricciardi’s classes that trained students on how to respond to a cardiac arrest emergency.

The students investigated how the heart works and how to keep it healthy. As a conclusion to the unit, the eighth-graders received training on how to perform chest compressions and use an automated external defibrillator to save another person’s life.

“Knowing how to perform this simple skill can save a life,” Ricciardi said. “The students practiced using real-life scenarios and learned how to respond individually and as a rescue team member.”

As of 2016, every student in the state of New York is required to learn the lifesaving skills of compressions-only CPR before they graduate from high school.
