Beginning with a series of programs called Three-Minute Science for ages 5 and older, the library invites children to drop in on Mondays, beginning July 7, from 3:30-5 p.m. (continuing weekly through Monday, Aug. 11), and get involved in a weekly science experiment.

The Three-Minute Science experiments, selected and prepared by Thornton-Donovan High School student Dylan Pizzo, use everyday objects to demonstrate in simple terms a scientific principle. For the complete Three-Minute Science schedule, check the library’s online calendar at www.larchmontlibrary.org.

The STEM programs for children offered by the library are a part of a unique summer series that encourages children to read books in the categories of science, technology, engineering and math as well as art.

Children are given an incentive to read in these categories by being awarded prizes for the number of hours spent reading.

“It’s never too early to get children interested in science, technology and the other categories represented in STEM”, said Rebecca Teglas, head of children’s services. “There are marvelous books available in all age groups that make science, technology, engineering and math fun. Exposing children at an early age to how much fun STEM can be may provide the foundation necessary for them to pursue a career in a STEM related field.”

Other July and August STEM-related programs for children include Story Laboratory for ages 3 and 4; Stories for Mad Scientists for ages 5-7; and Library Lab for ages 8-11. Library Lab presents STEM experiments hosted by the Westchester Children’s Museum's Museum Without Walls educational program.
