MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- A Mamaroneck-based grass roots group is set to celebrate International Peace Day with a community gathering Saturday at Harbor Island.

Circles of Peace, an organization dedicated to promoting peace and mindfulness, is inviting residents to celebrate International Peace Day at 5 p.m. Saturday at Harbor Island, according to a press release.

The meeting for Circles of Peace will mark the group's third since forming in January "to combat violence and anger in our homes and communities," according to a release. The group’s founder, Mamaroneck's Hilde Friderichs, "hopes the movement will inspire all participants to practice mindfulness in their interactions with people both within their communities and their own homes," according to the release.

“The only way we can help to change violent behavior is to serve as examples of peaceful and mindful living,” said Friderichs in the release. “This is hard – and it requires daily practice and discipline. But if we choose kindness – and support one another in this choice - together we can promote a culture of love and peace, of unity and oneness – and everybody will benefit.”

Saturday’s meeting features a Peace Walk and participants will be encouraged to share their “dreams for the world” which will be photographed along with their portraits by Friderichs’s husband Charles Silvestro, according to the release. The images will later be exhibited in January 2014 at the Mamaroneck Public Library.

The gathering will also feature live music by Mimi Zimmermann, a reading by writer and poet Donna Magnotta and a group visualization/meditation by Friderichs, a practiced Zen Buddhist meditator, trained Reiki instructor and Laughter Yoga Leader, according to the release

Participants are asked to meet at 5 p.m. at the Recreation Building outside on the deck at Harbor Island Park. For more information, residents are asked to visit the Circles of Peace website .
