Larchmont-Based Kontoulis Olive Oil Is Vendor At Ossining Indoor Market

OSSINING, N.Y. -- Beets anyone? Despite the bitter cold, farm-fresh veggies and fruits will be available at the Ossining Indoor Down To Earth Market, which will open with a ribbon cutting and other events Saturday, Jan. 10.

The market, which is headed indoors for the first time ever in its 24-year history in the village, will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Claremont Elementary School at 2 Claremont Road, with a ribbon-cutting with elected officials and community advocates, featuring Mayor Victoria Gearity set for 9:30 a.m.  .

"We're really excited about this," said Nicole Reed of Down to Earth Markets.

Some of the vendors include Norwalk-based Wave Hill Breads, whose bread has won raves from NPR, Hastings-based Talim Falafel Shacks with its Israeli soul food like baba ghanoush, and Yorktown-based Bombay Emerald Chutney Company. Other local vendors include Pound Ridge-based Champagne Tea and Larchmont-based Kontoulis Family Olive Oil, which offers olive oil from olive groves in Greece.

"We've been going strong in Ossining for 24 years," Reed said. "Having a year-round market is the cherry on top of the sundae."

The farmer's market will also be hosting a music series, including a jug band and a world musician for children, and is launching a bring your own bag initiative.

"We want to eliminate single use plastic bags," Reed said. "We're working with vendors and the community. It's become a grassroots community-led effort. We've noticed more than half of our shoppers are shopping with reusable plastic bags."

Ossining resident Sharon Rowe will be selling her eco friendly reusable bags from her company, ECOBAGS.

Reed said she is glad Ossining residents now have a year-round farmers market to call their own.

"The stars aligned with the support of the community," Reed said. "We feel really good about it. This is a real community collaboration."
