Participants will learn about various subjects such as the challenges of teaching the Holocaust to a contemporary audience and even how Mickey Mouse and Lady Gaga connect to the Holocaust in “Unexpected Holocaust Histories.” They will explore such questions as, “How do we make sense of the Holocaust in a world where history is being rewritten?” and “How do we teach the next generation?”
The series begins with Cohen’s talk “Dead Ends: Searching for My Grandfather's Family" at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23
At 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24, Cohen delivers “Without Witnesses- the Future of Holocaust Education,” detailing the struggles of a Holocaust educator. Lunch will follow.
The workshop “Holocaust Time Travel - the Do's and Don'ts of Holocaust Education" will be held from 12:45 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. At 8 p.m., Cohen will present an interactive talk: "Laughing at the Holocaust - Jews Found humor in the darkest days."
On Sunday, Jan. 25, Cohen will lead the workshop "Unexpected Holocaust Histories” at 10 a.m. A complimentary brunch follows at 11 a.m.
The final workshop, "Overlapping Triangles - Hidden stories of Jews and Non-Jews in the Holocaust," will be held at 11:30 a.m.
This program coincides with the observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Jan. 27 and the release of Cohen’s new Holocaust novel, “TRAIN.”
Cohen teaches at the Northwestern University School of Education & Social Policy. He is the director and creator of "Unsilence,” a series of educational programs for teenagers and the public. It sheds light on marginalized narratives of the Holocaust, genocide and human rights.
