The program informs and empowers high school students and adults to be community allies and "first responders" to support teens and families in crisis.

The keynote speaker will be Kevin Hines, an author, documentary filmmaker, and suicide prevention and mental health advocate. He has reached millions with his story of an unlikely survival and his strong will to live.

Two years after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, he attempted to take his life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge.

Hines is one of only 34 (less than 1 percent) to survive the fall.

Ginger Katz, founder of The Courage to Speak Foundation, will present to parents information about her organization's drug prevention education curriculum.

The program called “Courage to Speak – Courageous Parenting 101” gives parents tools to talk to their children about alcohol and drugs.

The program will feature Interactive Workshops for Adults: “House Parties: Alcohol, Drugs and the Law” PSA (Public Service Announcement) followed by a panel discussion of professionals in the medical, law enforcement, and social services fields, sponsored by the Health Alliance on Alcohol.

Adult workshops will include:

  • Youth Mental Health and Courageous Parenting 101 Interactive Workshops for High School Students
  • House Parties: Alcohol, Drugs and the Law
  • The Dating Game
  • Alcohol Poisoning and Drug Abuse Interactive Informational Exhibits
  • Crashed Car and “Hidden in Plain Sight,” a display which recreates a teen’s bedroom to help parents identify signs their son or daughter may be using alcohol and drugs

Program Certificates (for resumes/portfolios) and five community service hours will be given to all high school participants.

All Save A Life participants will be rewarded with fee admissioin to Taste of Yorktown.
