Composting Classes To Start In Larchmont

LARCHMONT, N.Y. – Learn how to recycle food scraps and use them to fertilize your lawn or garden at a master composting class starting Monday, Oct. 8, at Larchmont's Sheldrake Environmental Center.

The six-week class, offered through the Westchester County Master Composter and RecyclerProgram, will teach participants the benefits of composting and how to make it and offer them an opportunity to buy their own composter.

Compost is defined as recycled organic matter that can provide nutrition for your lawn.

“You use mostly food in the compost,” said Amy Bisignana, scheduling coordinator for the Sheldrake Center. “After it is ready, you can put into your soil.”

Classes are held Mondays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. through Nov. 19, except Nov. 12. There are six class workshops and four field trips to composting facilities.

When they finished the program, participants are asked to go out into the community and share what they have learned.

“They make a commitment to go out in the community and help and volunteer,” said Bisignani.

To register, contact Amy Bisignani at scheduling@sheldrakecenter.org or call 914-834-1443. There is a suggested participant fee of $175, and participants can buy an 80-gallon compost bin for $85.
