"Because every room has its own purpose and scale, the selection process is important," said Kimberly Scappaticci, the design director at Wallauer’s Design Center. "Some windows scream shutters, others need fabric, while others need the softness and warmth of Roman shades."

One of the leading names in window fashions, Hunter Douglas offers a variety of different styles to choose from. For homeowners who are looking to block light, yet don't want to cut off the natural world, coverings such as sheers and shades offer a stylish filter. Wood shutters also allow the amount of light to be altered, and evoke a classic, elegant style. These light-filtering shades are perfect for kitchens, dining rooms and high-traffic living areas.

"Light-filtering shades create daylighting, a method of lighting rooms with natural light rather than generating illumination from electricity," said Scappaticci. "Sheer shades and other select styles actually diffuse light as it enters, and help draw brightness deeper into the room. You can also direct incoming light where it's needed most by tilting the louvers, slats, vanes, blinds and panels. By drawing natural light into a room, many style window treatments have been proven to reduce energy needs and save money."

However, in some spaces such as bedrooms and media rooms, darkness is desired. In those instances, opting for blackout shades is the best option. Hunter Douglas' Roman, cellular and vertical blinds all offer great sunlight protection while accenting a room's overall theme.

In addition to adding style to any space, shades can also increase a house's energy efficiency. During warm months, shades can block out the sun and keep a room cool. During the winter, blinds serve as an insulator and prevent heat from escaping through glass.

"If you don’t have energy efficient window treatments, 50 percent of a home's heating and cooling energy can be lost through its windows," said Scappaticci. "Hunter Douglas window fashions are made to provide increased protection against heat loss during the winter, as well as minimizing the sun's heat during the summer."
