Friday Storm Means Sunday Fun In The Snow In Mamaroneck

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- After Mamaroneck residents weathered winter storm Nemo that hit Westchester Friday, shutting down schools, businesses and other local facilities, Sunday afternoon brought them out to enjoy the snow.

Slush lined the streets, but the roads were mostly clean due to the plows and salt trucks that were still out working. There were no reported issues with vehicles as of Sunday, according to the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department.

Children were out Sunday with their sleds, saucers and snow pants at the park near the Larchmont Reservoir and on the slope behind Mamaroneck High School facing Palmer Avenue.

"We came out for the hill," said John Leifert, whose kids are 9 and 7. "We were here yesterday and it was a lot more crowded, but it's a lot better for sledding today because the snow is packed down. They're getting some good speed."

Leifert said the storm gave him no problems because he and his family made sure to stay indoors. "On Friday, I just got home early and hunkered down."

James Balagot also brought his 4 and 6-year-old to play at the high school. "They're having fun; it's a great time for them," he said. "Friday wasn't really a big deal either because, thankfully, we have neighbors with power shovels and they did the work for me. So it's mostly just fun."

Across the street at Walter's hot dog stand, lines were long despite the cold. People on the sidewalks hopped between low snow banks and mountains feet high.

"We've had a lot of kids come to our door offering to shovel, but I'm doing my best to walk my dog," said Grace Rafferty, who was with her dog Georgia. "Her only issues,” he said of Georgia, “are with salty paws, but other than that, she loves the snow."

Rafferty said she also welcomed the early school dismissal on Friday. "I kind of stayed inside all day and stocked up on some major junk food. It was too crazy to even try to do anything else."
