NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- With Hurricane Joaquin making headlines, now is as good a time as ever to make sure you and your family are well prepared to deal with a similar emergency as we move into the heart of hurricane season.

"People need to just be prepared, ready themselves and their family." says Omar Small, Deputy City Manager. "That preparedness helps us out tremendously; if folks have made plans, it lessens the impact on our services and helps our ability to respond.."

The City of New Rochelle advises residents to follow FEMA and Red Cross guidelines to make sure they are safe and secure during storms. A survival kit is highly recommended, and should include the following:

A survival kit is highly recommended, and should include the following:

  • It is recommended that you have at least three days of supplies in an easy-to-carry evacuation kit, with additional supplies on hand.
  • A supply of water sealed in unbreakable containers.
  • Non-perishable foods that require no refrigeration and are ready to eat with little or no preparation. A manual can opener is essential.
  • First-aid kit with prescription medications. Make sure medical information and instructions are clearly written.
  • Stay tuned and alert: Use battery or crank powered radios and flashlights.
  • Have a change of clothes, gloves, hats, and sturdy shoes available, in addition to blankets or sleeping bags. Pay attention to special items for infants, toddlers, disabled, or elderly family members.
  • Have photo id on hand, with important papers, copies of birth certificate, insurance policies, passports etc.
  • Cash and credit cards

A full list and more information can be found on the City website .

During an emergency, the City will also use a reverse 911 calling system, where New Rochelle authorities can provide information to cell phones and email addresses based on location. Residents and business owners are urged to sign up for this free service through the City website, www.newrochelleny.com/newroalert

Often, its making the small preparations that can make a difference says Small. "Do the little things like make sure you have fresh batteries, your flashlights are working, and making sure you have a plan will put you in a better spot "
