The technique, known as seining, involves using a vertical net kept in place with weights and buoys. Fish swim into the net and become ensnared.

All fish that were not used for the aquariums were released back into the wild.

The Marine Education Center opened in Harbor Island Park in April 2013 and is free to the public.

For more information on the Center and how to volunteer, contact the Village at (914) 777-7700.
