Mamaroneck Resident Helps People MELT 'Stuck Stress'

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- MELT may sound like something you've been waiting for all winter, but it's really a simple self-treatment technique that helps people get relief from chronic pain.

Joy Jacobson, of Mamaroneck, is the only one teaching the method in Southern Westchester, and describes it as a way to "reconnect, rebalance, release and rehydrate" the body.

The program, which relies on gentle, repetitive movements using soft body rollers and small balls, is all about eliminating "stuck stress," a MELT term for connective tissue dehydration -- in other words, those aches and pains we all have.

Its goal: To target connective tissue as a way to boost the body's natural healing and reparative mechanisms, thereby eliminating stress and pain and slowing down the aging process.

MELT is especially helpful for arthritis, chronic back, neck and shoulder pain, digestion, sleep issues and chronic illness. It also improves posture, mobility, balance and muscular efficiency. "When the connective tissue is doing its job, the body can be more efficient and stronger," Jacobson explains.

Since MELT creator Sue Hitzmann was featured on "The Dr. Oz Show" two years ago, MELT has gained a following, with participants ranging from high school students to senior citizens.

Jacobson, a dancer and personal trainer with 22 years' experience in all kinds of exercise regimens and alternative healing techniques, will teach MELT at the Larchmont/Mamaroneck Center for Continuing Education starting Friday, March 13.
