The Larchmont/Mamaroneck Chabad's "one-of-a-kind event'' is set for Sunday Dec. 21. Chabad will provide menorahs for anyone who wants to join the parade, led by luxury cars from local auto dealerships. Pre-registration is required.
The Westchester Jewish Council and Chabad-Lubavitch, meanwhile, plan a grand menorah parade, featuring 15 preregistered cars, at 5 p.m. Wednesday Dec. 17, starting at Yonkers City Hall, 40 S. Broadway.
Hanukkah, the Jewish festival celebrating the liberation and rededication of the ancient Temple in Jerusalem, begins at sundown on Tuesday Dec. 16 and concludes Dec. 24.
The holiday is marked by the lighting of an eight-pronged candelabrum called a menorah, or Chanukiah, commemorating the symbol of victory of a small Jewish army against a vastly oppressive regime.
"We are always looking for new ideas to keep everyone at the edge of their seats. The car parade is perfect because people can learn about the holiday in an interactive way, and they love it because they really have a lot of fun," said Rabbi Mendel Silberstein.
Several dealerships on Boston Post Road are providing cars to lead Sunday's parade, including Porsche of Larchmont, Ray Catena Lexus, Larchmont Jaguar, Acura of Westchester, New Rochelle Hyundai, and Fiat of Larchmont.
The parade of dazzling cars will be adorned with car menorahs and Hanukkah flags. After a celebratory ride through town, the parade will cap-off with the lighting of Larchmont and Mamaroneck’s tallest menorah in front of Chabad at 921 West Boston Post Road, Mamaroneck.
A pre-parade car line-up begins at 4:30 p.m. and will depart at 5 p.m. by police escort from Chabad of Larchmont & Mamaroneck.
The procession will return to the starting point at 6 p.m. to participate in a family-oriented Hanukkah program at Chabad, featuring a light and fire show, lively music, latkes, donuts, hot drinks and a free toy raffle sponsored by Toy Box of 300 W. Boston Post Road.
The parade and post-parade celebration is free and open to the public. The community is encouraged to join the parade with their cars. Chabad will provide free car menorahs for those who register. Cars will drive through the streets of Yonkers and proceed to Nahmias et Fils at 201 Saw Mill River Road. The Yonkers' parade is offering 15 car slots on a first-come first-serve basis. All are welcome to come and watch.
