For Michael and Donna Weissman of New Rochelle whose Elk Avenue house was recently featured in the about-to-be-released movie "Adult Beginners," that day was a few months ago when their daughter, a stand-in for the film, called and told them the famous comedian/actress was in the house. "The minute we heard, we rushed right over," said Donna.
Apparently Poehler is dating Nick Kroll who is in the movie. Other celebrities that traipsed up and down their staircase on any given day included Rose Byrne and Bobby Canavale. "They were very gracious and appreciative," Donna Weissman said. (And yes, Poehler was equally nice.)
This is the first movie the family has been involved with though their house has been used in the past for several commercials.
How it happened: A location scout left a flier in their mailbox describing the project. When the Weissmans called to say yes, the scout came over to take pictures, which then led to a walk-through with the director and producer.
Once the approval was worked out, the family moved out for a month.
"They only shot in the house for 13 days, but they needed prep time and clean up time," said Donna. "We were very lucky that our brother-in-law, who lives a mile away, let us move in with him. Otherwise, they would have found us a rental or put us up in a hotel."
And, as movie people do, they moved a lot of their stuff out (Donna said they take pictures of everything beforehand so they can put it all back), but they also left some things, which, she said, is "pretty cool because you can see our stuff in the trailer."
They were also allowed to come home whenever they wanted -- for example, seeing Poehler -- but it was "surreal to have 75 people milling about and equipment all over the place," said Donna Weissman.
The funniest part, she said, was when they had to chop ice and snow off their front lawn as the movie is supposed to take place in the fall and filming took place in January/February.
"Our house was the only one on the entire street -- probably in all of new Rochelle -- without any snow on the lawn," she said.
And though the Weissmans said it was a wonderful experience, both admitted they were "really ready" to move back home.
The movie, about a hipster who moves in with his estranged pregnant sister in the suburbs, is set for release on April 24.
