The 6,000 square-foot space, family-owned and operated by brothers Edgar and Hector Brambila, has been transformed into a cheery Mexican-tiled eatery with cozy booths, a spacious bar, and lots of space for large groups. The two also own a restaurant in Fairfield, CT with another one planned for Westport.

On the menu: Healthful Mexican fare including gluten-free hand-stretched yellow tortillas, quesadillas, enchiladas, and special-to-the-restaurant entrees such as Matador chicken (a giant portion of wood-grilled marinated chicken breast), "Square Knot" salmon (with achiote, lemon and roasted pineapple) and the Rio Bravo Trio, eight-ounce skirt steak, a chicken mole enchilada and three bacon-wrapped shrimp sauteed in garlic butter.

And then there are the margaritas: A large variety of what Edgar calls "look at me" cocktails, one of which comes flaming to the table. All are served in oversized handblown glasses.

There are also margarita pitchers that range from $30 to $50 (and serve five). Come on "Mucho Monday" for half price pitchers. Other specials include "Siesta Sunday," with half price bottles of wine and $3 Coronas and "Rio Grande Thursdays"  with domestic beer for $3 and $5 Margaritas with No Name (housemade margarita with Luna Azul Blanco, 100% Blue Agave Tequila and the restaurant's housemade sour).

Also fun: You can make your own margaritas from the more than 55 tequilas, along with a mixer and seasoning.

A party room in the back holds up to 50 and parties are already being booked, said Hector.

The restaurant is open seven days a week from 11 am to 3 p.m. for lunch, from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. for dinner, to 11 p.m. on weekends. There is also a special Sunday brunch.

Rio Bravo is located at 189 Palmer Ave., (914) 341-1546; no website yet but go to Facebook for information.
