And so, he's set up a monthly meeting at Guapo Cocina Mexicana in Yonkers for folks to play (or watch) chess.

The first event is Sunday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m.

Residents can bring their boards or use the boards that will be set up at the restaurant to play, listen to live music, eat delicious food, network, and meet new people.

“It’s often hard to find spaces for Yonkers residents to gather but with the revitalization of Yonkers over the past few years, there are opportunities to partner with local businesses to create more accessible social spaces for our residents," said Coleman.

As much as Yonkers has developed, he said there are still many residents who prefer to take Metro North into the City for a night of networking.

Coleman hopes to change aspects of that exodus by collaborating with Guapo Cocina to bring a monthly Chess Social to the restaurant.

"Yonkers has momentum and bringing events to the area, especially events created by local residents, is key to the city’s long-term growth," said the Yonkers resident.

Guapo Cocina is at 10 Warburton Ave., 914-920-5900, www.guaporestaurant.com/.
