Fourth Of July Plans Differ For Larchmont Locals

LARCHMONT, N.Y. – Independence Day falls on a Wednesday this year, which may change the holiday’s dynamics for some Larchmont families.

“It’s weird that it’s on a Wednesday,” Larchmont resident Richard Miller said. “It kind of takes away from it, from tying it to a weekend and making it a three or four-day weekend.”

Miller said that it wouldn’t affect his family too much, but Hope O’Neill of Larchmont said she and her family will notice the holiday’s placement.

“It’s hard because we can’t go anywhere, because most people are only off on Wednesday,” she said. “But we will probably go to see the fireworks in Mamaroneck because they are close-by.”

The Fourth of July’s placement on a Wednesday only occurs every six to seven years and sometimes longer if a leap-year interferes.  The last time the holiday was on a Wednesday was in 2007, and before that 2001.  But prior to 2001, the last time Independence Day that fell on a Wednesday was 1990.

“We will be at the harbor,” said Karen Orchanian of Larchmont. “I don’t have to work the next day, but my husband does.”

The Gross family will also be watching the harbor fireworks on Wednesday night, which they said is actually different than what they normally do.

“This is the first year we are going to the fireworks,” said Amy Gross. “Our friend has a house that faces Harbor Island.”

Larchmont resident Rich Pilla joked and said to his friend, “Because it’s in the middle of the week we are taking the whole week off, aren't you?”

The Village of Mamaroneck fireworks will begin at 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday night at Harbor Island Park.  A fireworks show will also take place at Rye Playland and in New Rochelle.
