Kids Help Build Backpacks In YMCA Central, Northern Westchester Day Care

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Children in day-care programs at the White Plains branch of the YMCA of Central and Northern Westchester were the recipients of 25 new backpacks loaded with back-to-school supplies.

Children in day-care programs at the White Plains branch of the YMCA of Central and Northern Westchester were recipients of backpacks made by other local children in last week’s Macaroni Kid's Build A Backpack Drive.

The backpacks were put together by children who took part in last week’s Macaroni Kid's Build A Backpack Drive and Scavenger Hunt held at The Westchester in White Plains.

This event was the brainchild of Rachel Fenty, Macaroni Kid's White Plains editor and publisher and other local Macaroni Kid editors/publishers. Children who registered for the scavenger hunt received an empty backpack and clues to a scavenger hunt for backpack items, which were given out at stores throughout The Westchester.  The children returned with the filled backpacks and enjoyed snacks, prizes and activities.

The YMCA of Central and Northern Westchester, lead sponsor of the Macaroni Kid's event, was also on site at The Westchester, handing out information about fall daycare and aftercare programs, early registration for Camp Combe 2015 and packets on family gym and aquatics memberships. The Y also provided a fun kids activity for all attendees — making customized bubble bath, thanks to YMCA friend and supporter Kirstin Nagashima from Kensico Soap Bar in Thornwood.

“We are so pleased that children in our area recognize that they have peers who need their help,”  White Plains YMCA Executive Director Tom Hay said. "We are proud to sponsor a program such as the Build a Backpack Scavenger Hunt which promotes a sense of social responsibility in our youth. That’s what the YMCA is all about.”
