The Winward School is for students in grades one through nine with language-based learning disabilities. Russell has been Head of the White Plains co-educational day school since 2006, and has held positions in school districts in Westchester, New York and Fairfield County, Conn.

“I am delighted to be honored by Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities,” Russell said in a statement. “I wholeheartedly endorse their mission to educate, guide and inspire families of children with learning disabilities or ADHD – and to change the perception of learning disabilities as a stigmatizing condition.

Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities, a nonprofit based in Westport, strives to empower parents of children with learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders (ADHD). Actor Henry Winkler, known as The Fonz from the television show “Happy Days”, is the organization’s honorary chairman. The April 26 benefit will be hosted by Kate Snow, a correspondent for the NBC News show “Rock Center with Brian Williams”.

Beth Feldman, owner of Larchmont's Sweet and Social Bakery, will also be honored for her work as director of the Laurence W. Levine Foundation, which awards grants to charities.

“We are fortunate to have so many local residents, educators and business owners committed to making all children, including those who learn differently, achieve their dreams,” said Terry Ann Weil, Rye Brook resident and president of the Board of Directors of Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities.

The fundraiser will be held at 7 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency in Greenwich, Conn. and will feature a cocktail reception, dinner, music and silent and live auctions.

“I believe that it is time to elevate the discussion of dyslexia and language-based learning disabilities to a national level so that the vast potential of learning disabled students can be realized in every school. I am grateful to Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities for the leadership role that it has played in this initiative.”
