LARCHMONT, N.Y. – The Larchmont Chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood is inviting high school seniors to apply for a women's scholarship in the memory of Jean Bruce. Applications are due March 1.

P.E.O., which stands for Philanthropic Educational Organization, is dedicated to the advancement of women internationally through scholarships, grants, awards and loans, and its mission is to promote women's education.

The local chapter announced an annual $2,000 scholarship, which will be awarded in Bruce's memory to a candidate selected by the organization. Candidates must:

  • Be 20 years of age or less on March 1;
  • Be citizens or legal permanent residents of the U.S. or Canada;
  • Reside in the Larchmont/Mamaroneck community;
  • Plan to attend an accredited postsecondary educational institution in the U.S. or Canada in the fall of 2013;
  • Have a minimum unweighted grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

The scholarship selection committee will select the applicant deemed to have best demonstrated excellence in academics, leadership, extracurricular activities, community service and potential for future success.

Bruce was an ambitious woman with a long career at Standard Oil who continued as an exploration analyst when the company became Exxon. "For her time, she was sort of setting the bar, because in those days, women didn't work like that," said Jan Northrup, a member of the Larchmont Chapter. "She really was a career woman."

Bruce died in 2009 and left money to the Larchmont Chapter for the cause of motivating women to follow their aspirations. That bequest funds the scholarship.
