The garden was created in memory of Ryder Gordon Brown, who died Jan. 18 at the age of 3, following a brief illness. The garden will serve as a place for families to enjoy, explore and learn with their children, and also will serve as a space for outdoor children’s programs.

One of Brown’s favorite things was to visit the Larchmont Library’s Children’s Room, and to participate in as many programs as he could.

“Ryder loved to be in the library and he was loved by our staff. We’re pleased that we can play a role in the creation of Ryder’s Children’s Garden,” said Library Director Laura Eckley.

Ryder’s Children’s Garden at the Larchmont Public Library will feature the color orange prominently, Ryder's favorite color, which has taken on special meaning for his family.

“The tragedy of losing Ryder has reinforced in our family the importance of doing what you can, when you can, and to shine a bright orange light of positivity and hope into the world,” said his mother, Alison. “It is with that that notion that we decided to honor our son and keep his magical spirit alive and present every day with the Ryder’s Children’s Garden at the Larchmont Public Library. With this garden, it is our hope to create an environment filled with color (mostly orange, of course), and childhood whimsy for children of all ages to enjoy, explore, and learn in.”

Ryder’s Children’s Garden is being designed by Catherine Wachs of The Lazy Gardener of Larchmont.

The Brown family will continue to support the garden with money from a foundation they are creating in their son’s memory. To make a donation to Ryder’s Children’s Garden, make a check payable to the Larchmont Public Library and indicate on the memo line “Ryder’s Children’s Garden.” Donations should be sent to the Larchmont Public Library, 121 Larchmont Ave., Larchmont, NY 10538.
