Larchmont Woman's Deeds for Mamaroneck HS Girls Rewarded

LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- Nicole Sheindlin has connected 135 high school seniors with yearlong apprenticeships through "Her Honor Mentoring" over the last six years, a feat that will be recognized at the 2012 Volunteer Spirit Awards on April 20.

The Volunteer Center, a nonprofit organization based in Rye Brook, will honor Sheindlin, of Larchmont, with the education and literacy award at their 32nd annual Spirit Awards. There are seven other local volunteers that will also be honored.

"The Volunteer Spirit Awards celebrate the ways the young and young at heart use professional skills, talents and enthusiasm to give back 365 days a year," said Alisa Kesten, executive director of The Volunteer Center in a press release. "We applaud the invaluable contributions of all volunteers who affect change in our neighborhoods."

Sheindlin said founded "Her Honor Mentoring" in 2006 to give high school girls an opportunity to work with female professionals in their community. The program, administered by the Westchester County Office for Women and the Women’s Research and Education Fund, began with eight girls from Mamaroneck High School. Today, five Westchester high schools match select rising seniors with a local businesswoman in a field of their interest.

"I have a lot of respect for Alisa Kesten," Sheindlin said. "The concept is great and they do a wonderful job. And, it's nice to be honored by such a prestigious organization."

The Volunteer Center has been a resource for the program, identifying local businesswomen willing to take on an apprentice, Sheindlin said. This year, Kesten connected Sheindlin with the Blue Door Association in Yonkers, which has taken on Thalia Garcia of Saunders Trades and Technical High School. Garcia dreams of attending Pratt Institute to pursue an art career, according to the "Her Honor Mentoring" website.

Janice Gallick, president of Care Circle and Sheindlin's friend, nominated her for the award.

"My friend nominated me, which was very sweet of her," Sheindlin said. "I was surprised when they called because I was unaware that she had even written a letter on my behalf."

The awards ceremony will be held at the Hilton Rye Town on April 20 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and will be hosted by Lou Young, a Larchmont resident and CBS 2 reporter.

Ticket for the event are $75 per person, $55 for nonprofit staff members and all proceeds benefit The Volunteer Center’s work to promote volunteerism. For further information contact The Volunteer Center at 914-948-4452, e-mail vsa@volunteer-center.org or visit its website.
