Seven years later, Evan Greenberg of Mamaroneck, now 13, has raised more than $10,000 for various charity organizations including Oxfam, the Larchmont Food Pantry and the Pediatric Cancer Foundation (PCF) by selling hot cocoa.
He and his family are currently gearing up for their eighth annual fundraiser on Feb. 8-9 at All Good Things in Scarsdale, where they plan to break their previous record of raising $4,000 for the PCF.
Evan originally had the idea to give away cocoa because he wanted to help people stay warm during the winter, but his parents guided him towards the idea of giving the money to charity.
"I decorated a cardboard box to get ready to hand it out at school, and my parents talked to me about doing it out of our garage and giving the money to Oxfam," he said.
For five years, Evan and his brother Joshua, 11, sold the hot cocoa out of their garage before moving to All Good Things in Scarsdale, known then as Last Licks.
It was around that time that New York Mets player Jason Bay moved to Larchmont, and, as a big fan, Evan hoped Bay might participate by signing a few things to raffle off.
Though Bay never replied, after sending letters and emails to the Mets, the organization agreed to donate signed memorabilia and tickets to be raffled off at the fundraiser.
Now, several additional local sports teams contribute to the event, including the New York Giants, New York Jets, New York Rangers and the New Jersey Devils.
The fundraiser has wildly exceeded Evan, and his parents', expectations.
"I never realized how big it would become. I'm really proud of it," he said.
Evan attends Hommocks Middle School, and his brother Joshua attends The Mamaroneck Avenue School. Both live with their parents Elisa and Ken in Mamaroneck.
All Good Things is located at 1074 Wilmot Road in Scarsdale.
