Mamaroneck Puzzle Solver Readies For 38th Crossword Competition

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Ed Stein admits he doesn't expect to score high at the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament taking place at the Stamford Marriott this weekend but at age 78, it's still nice to know he can compete.

"The event is stimulating," he said. "It's also a great way to see if all my marbles are still working."

With age, he admits, your scores are bound to go down. Stein has been going to the conventions on and off for the past 37 years.

This year is especially thrilling because for the first time in many years, it's back in Stamford where it originally started. It had previously been in Brooklyn. "Now, it's much cheaper," Stein said.

The tournament begins at 11 a.m. Saturday with three crosswords in the morning, three in the afternoon and one more Sunday morning. The puzzles are all from top puzzle makers and range from easy to hard.

Contestants score points for accuracy and speed and prizes are awarded in 21 categories -- for skill level, age, and geography -- with additional prizes for the top rookies. First prize is $5,000.

On Saturday night, the directors of the film "Wordplay," a documentary about the tournament, will discuss the movie and show outtakes.

Approximately 600-700 participants are expected to attend.
