MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Six years ago while on vacation, Mamaroneck resident Nancy Vincent saw people paddleboarding and decided to try it. Now, this avid swimmer is a certified instructor with a new business she started in June.
Vincent said growing up in Briarcliff Manor she always had a love for the water. She found her passion for fitness at a young age swimming competitively and later competed in numerous Olympic distance triathlons.
Formerly a stay at home mom of three, she is now a World Paddle Association (WPA) certified instructor. She is also American Red Cross CPR, first aid and automated external defibrilator (AED) and waterfront lifeguard certified.
With that background, as well as boatload of enthusiam, she was hired this summer by the Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Department to teach their stand up paddleboard classes. But Vincent said she was having so much fun, she wanted to teach more. That's when she decided to purchase more boards and start SUPwestchester.com . (The SUP stands for Stand up Paddleboarding)
She is now teaching private and semi private lessons at the public launch on Rushmore and Bleeker by Orienta Beach Club in Mamaroneck and at the Rye town dock by the American Yacht Club to those 10 and older, as well as offering SUP tours.
Her goal, she said, is for parents to be able to rent boards on vacations with their families and have fun paddling correctly while feeling safe. "When you are out on the water the elements can change very quickly," she said. " The waters can become choppy, high winds can pick up, storms can roll in, and you can start cramping. I teach adults and children what to do if this happens along with proper technique."
She says she loves the board because it gets all the muscles in the body working at one time. "A lot of sports isolate certain areas of the body but SUP works everything from your head to your toes," she said.
It's also simply "a lot of fun to be out on the water," she said.
Vincent is hoping to run SUP through mid Fall or "as long as the water doesn’t fall below 60 degrees."
