The Rev. Carol D. Gadsden, also known as Mother Gadsden, is now the 16th rector of the Boston Post Road church.

The Right Rev. Andrew M. L. Dietsche, Episcopal Bishop of New York, read a Letter of Institution for Gadsden  Saturday, Jan. 24.

Representatives of the St. Thomas community presented Gadsden with a variety of gifts, including a Bible, the Book of Common Prayer, bread and wine, and the keys to the church.

“I am profoundly happy for St. Thomas,” Dietsche said during the service. “I have absolute confidence in Carol. I believe that she is a person of courage and faith, stability and foresight and I know that this congregation is a place with the same virtues.”

Gadsden, who joined St. Thomas in September, has served congregations in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.

A native of Syracuse, Gadsden is married to Linda March, and has two adult daughters, Hilary Nieukirk and Courtney Mandell.

St. Thomas has services at 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Sundays.
