Montessori Summer Camp Offers Top Benefits

A school summer camp? Really?! Might as well put on a Grinch suit and sprint away with Christmas, too… After all, isn’t summer about coloring outside the lines, stimulating friendships, boundless opportunity for physical activity, exciting travel and self-exploration?

The Montessori approach allows children to discover and learn in a lively, hands-on environment that encourages self-motivation, creativity and innovative thinking.

Yes, yes, and yes. But it is also about discovery, independence, challenging personal abilities and gaining self-concept. Year-round goals of Montessori programming, and arguably therefore, seamless in methodology from school term into summer.

Top Benefits of a Montessori Summer Camp:

  1. Hands-On: the Montessori approach allows children to discover and learn in a lively, hands-on environment that encourages self-motivation, creativity and innovative thinking. Summer programming capitalizes on this notion.  Without exception, activities facilitate creative exploration and invention. Coloring outside the lines is uniformly encouraged!

  2. Socialization (Community): central to Montessori is an emphasis on the strength and wisdom of community. Diversity is celebrated, social interaction valued. Psychologist  Dr. Stephen Fine writes “Children meet people at camp they may not come into contact with in their everyday lives. (Camp) breaks down barriers that kids often put up between each other. Social bonds between campers can be deep, lasting and are of great importance”.

  3. Movement: Visit a Montessori environment and you will see children actively working on projects that interest them. We believe that freedom of movement and freedom to explore is crucial to learning. What better time and arena within which to further this notion than summer and the great outdoors?  In a Montessori camp, your child will be “on the go”, literally, within each planned and spontaneous activity.

  4. Travel: Summer camp on both of our campuses incorporate weekly travel to local areas of attraction. For those campers who are under the age of 3, guest speakers and presentations come to camp! Check out trip selections at: www.HudsonCountry.org/Programs/SummerCamp 2015.

  5. Growth: Face-it, a summer program where your child has fun learning with friends in an environment designed to expand her horizons under the experienced guidance of educators isn’t such a bad thing. Especially when she’s having the time of her life while doing so!
