LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- Nearly $20,000 has been raised -- and clothing, furniture and other necessities collected -- for families left homeless by an apartment building fire on Sunday.

"You Caring" web sites have been set up by parents at The Chatsworth apartment building in Larchmont to raise money for two families who lost everything as they fled the early morning fire that displaced a dozen families. Several street-level businesses also were impacted.

Larchmont Fire Department officials said the cause of the fire, which is not suspicious, remains under investigation. About a dozen families left homeless by the fire are temporarily staying with friends and families, authorities said.

Tiffany Smith, a village resident and Daily Voice community advisor said, "Donations of money and gift cards are rolling in daily and the clothing that was collected filled the court room at Village Hall."

Villa Maria provided lunch and Polpettina provided dinner for first responders and victims on Sunday. Other restaurants including Apariey, Auray, Corriander and Fjord have offered meals as well. As families are finding new home donations of furniture are now pouring in as well, Smith said.

"The generosity of the community has been unbelievable," Smith said.
