Max Alfaro, 22, and his friends from New Rochelle and Mamaroneck went on a fishing charter near Star Island in Montauk, N.Y. on July 7. The group reeled in a record-breaking 423-pound thresher shark.

Alfaro said, “We were out on the water for maybe 30 minutes before the shark hit on the line. I reeled it in for ten minutes, Alex took over for another 10, and then Jimmy pulled it in after another 20. It was a group effort.”

After 40 minutes of reeling, group members Max Alfaro, Nick Manfredo, Freddie Martignetti, Matt O’Shea, Jimmy Codella and Alex Ricevuto, with help from Capt. Jack Passie, hauled onto their boat what would be the largest catch of the season.

“It was a monster. It was awesome,” Alfaro said.

Alfaro and his friends were informed that had they caught the shark a mere week earlier, they would have won an $100,000 grand prize at a local shark-fishing tournament.

The group plans on going out again for shark-fishing season, which goes from June until Sept.

“It was really a team effort and the size was luck of the draw, but we definitely plan on going out again,” he said.
