Starting in June, the Academy will introduce an intensive two- or four- week summer arts program with a dynamic curriculum of painting, drawing, sculpture and new media classes combined with gallery and museum visits, in-depth portfolio review, and even the opportunity to exhibit your work.
The Summer Art Immersion is designed for both art hobbyists and aspiring professionals, who can expect to find the same experience of an Academy art class within a shortened time frame. Says Jennifer Brickman, a current Academy student, “I love the freedom of exploring different mediums, techniques, and forms of artistic expression. The small class size allows for plenty of one-on-one time with teachers, each with their own style and area of expertise.”
The National Academy is one of the first art schools in the country, founded in 1826 when twenty students and two professional artists began sketching by candlelight. The Academy was also one of the first art schools to accept women and offer women’s life-drawing classes. Some of the most acclaimed students of the National Academy have included Winslow Homer, George Inness, Arshile Gorky, and Willem de Kooning.
The Academy is known for its spacious, sky-lit studios and highly creative learning environment. The classes are never too crowded and the faculty is dedicated to the students, guiding them closely on their artistic journey. As another perk, the school is directly connected to the National Academy Museum, which offers students free admission to exhibitions as well as panel discussions and talks with artists.
