MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Organizers of Sunday's sixth annual Sound Shore St. Patrick’s Day Parade called it a success while announcing students scholarships.
With a motorcycle escort provided by the Village of Mamaroneck’s finest, moving to the sounds of the Pipes and Drums of the Police Emerald Society of Westchester, Grand Marshal Valerie O’Keeffe led the 2017 Sound Shore St. Patrick's Day Parade down Mamaroneck Avenue, blessed with beautiful sunny weather.
The crowds were entertained by such diverse groups as the O’Rourke Irish Dancers and Habitat for Humanity’s “Fire," celebrating Irish heritage and the American Immigrant experience.
Marching down Mamaroneck Avenue with the locals in demonstration of their support were elected officials from both Larchmont and Mamaroneck Villages as well as the town of Mamaroneck, County Legislator Catherine Parker, County Executive Rob Astorino, Deputy County Executive and past Grand Marshal Kevin Plunkett, State Assemblyman Steve Otis, State Sen. George Latimer and Congressman Elliot Engel.
Besides providing a wonderful community experience for the Sound Shore, the Parade also raises funds for scholarships for eligible students residing in the Sound Shore community and/or attending high schools or colleges located in the Sound Shore community.
"The Sound Shore St. Patrick's Day Parade exists to throw a great Parade for the sound Shore communities to celebrate Irish and Irish-American culture,” said Committee member Chris Regan, “as well as to provide scholarships for deserving students who have dedicated part of their lives to preserving Irish culture and heritage in our communities.”
The Sound Shore St. Patrick's Day Parade Scholarship Committee has now awarded a total of $17,500 in scholarships, a tradition that began with the first Sound Shore St. Patrick's Day Parade.
