Westchester Kids Find Creative Ways To Help Mamaroneck Organization

KATONAH, N.Y. -- Children in Northern Westchester have found creative measures this summer to raise money for the Mamaroneck-based Pediatric Cancer Foundation (PCF).

Aidan Koff of Katonah is also supporting the Pediatric Cancer Foundation this summer. The lacrosse goalie is earning contributions for each save he makes this summer for his team.

Aidan Koff of Katonah and five girls from South Salem, who go by the name of the Soundview Loop Girls have put aside "just vegging" to help the nonprofit raise funds for research, state of the art equipment/instruments and patient/parent care for world-renowned hospitals including Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center.

As part of Koff’s preparation to become a Bar Mitzvah, an important component of his studies involves tikkun olam – repairing the world and participating in Tzedakah – social action. He combined his passion of being a dedicated lacrosse goalie with his desire to help children in need.

Creating “Goalie’s Goals,” Koff is raising money for the organization through a letter-writing campaign for people to contribute an amount per goal saved (for example, with donation of $.25 per goal saved x 100 saves anticipated = $25 donation) in the memo section.

His mom, Nancy, is the “bookkeeper” of the effort – donors would need to email her their price per save. “Sometimes words are not enough, and we all need to act,'' said Koff. "Goalie’s Goals makes every save count. Every penny counts. Every child in need counts.” So far, the tween has raised $998.

The Soundview Loop Girls of South Salem, who range in age from two to13, live on the street and have dedicated their summer to lemonade stands and fundraising for PCF. The girls held multiple lemonade stands throughout July and August.

“This is the time of the year that my daughters like to do lemonade stands and Pediatric Cancer Foundation’s mission and pediatric cancer really touches our heart,'' said Victoria Feroce, whose daughters are among the Soundview Loop Girls.

The girls are Ava Baiocco, Ana Lucia Villagomez, Natalie Feroce, Alliey Magistro and Maria Feroce.

The group plans to present a check from their fundraising at the end of summer. Thus far, the girls have raised $134, with more lemonade stands to come.

“The parents in our neighborhood believe it’s incredibly important that our children learn at an early age the importance of being charitable and giving back,” explained Feroce. Her 11-year-old daughter, Natalie, added: "It's important to me that we help these kids so they are here to have a better future ... I'm sending my love to them all."

The hospitals PCF supports are NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital; Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center; Stephen D. Hassenfeld Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at NYU Langone Medical Center; Cohen Children’s Medical Center of NY; Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center and Comer Children’s Hospital; and The University of Chicago Medicine & Biological Sciences
