MAMARONECK, N.Y. – An estimated 5,947 out of 13,963 Con Edison customers are without power in the town and village of Mamaroneck Thursday morning as of 5 a.m., down from 7,533 Wednesday morning, according to outage maps.

Officials with Con Edison could not determine Thursday morning when customers could expect power restoration, but said it could take at least a week.

“Restoring service to customers affected by a storm as destructive as Sandy is arduous and, if not done properly, dangerous,” said Con Ed officials in a press release. “The storm knocked down more than 100,000 primary electrical wires in overhead areas. There are also thousands of secondary wires down.”

More than 165,000 customers out of 348,198 total customers served by Con Ed in Westchester are out of power as of 5 a.m. Thursday, down from more than 180,000 customers Wednesday morning.

The previous record number of storm outages in Con Edison territory occurred in 2011, when Hurricane Irene caused about 203,000 customers to lose service, according to the release.

Authorities are asking customers to report outages and downed wires to Con Edison and not through local emergency service lines. Customers can call 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). When reporting an outage, customers are asked to have their Con Edison account numbers available and report whether their neighbors also have lost power. Customers who report outages will be called by Con Edison with their estimated restoration times as they become available, according to a press release.
