Westchester County legislators approved a $9.6 million renovation plan that will spare the 90-year-old pool on the Playland boardwalk from being replaced with a beachfront eatery on the water.
New Rochelle native Jim Maisano, who participated in swimming competitions at the pool growing up, proved instrumental in fighting the plan to replace, not renovate the pool, disputing the proposal from its outset.
A Bond Act was passed on Monday morning, and the legislature was passed in full by the Board of Legislators later that night. The funding will include the purchase of new equipment, lighting, decks and other work in the park.
“I am very pleased and proud that the Playland Pool will be here for the enjoyment of hundreds of thousands of Westchester County residents for many decades to come," Maisano said. "I’m especially happy that those kids who’s families can’t afford a membership at a club with a pool or for trips to the shore will have an easily accessible and affordable option to escape the brutal summer heat and humidity that we often have in the lower Hudson Valley.”
“During the long process to get to this point I made clear that due to costs, a public amenity such as Playland Pool could never be replaced by high priced private club memberships,” Legislator Catherine Parker, who represents the community noted. “Furthermore, I heard from countless residents & local officials about the serious concerns they had with any alternative options to the pool.”
