Apartment Fire Shuts Part of U.S. 1 in Mamaroneck

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- The Town of Mamaroneck Fire Department responded to a report of smoke coming from an apartment on Boston Post Road at 6:35 p.m. Saturday.

Chief Brenden Collins said no one was in the apartment when the fire started in the second floor bedroom and contained the flames within 10 minutes. There were no injuries.

"It appears to be accidental," Collins said.

A neighbor, also on the second floor, smelled smoked and called 911.

The Town of Mamaroneck Police Department were also on the scene and shut down all traffic on U.S. 1 between Dean Place and Dillon Road for over an hour while firemen secured the apartment.

"There was stuff laying all over the room, which made it hard to gain aacess to the fire," said Collins, adding they had to overhaul the apartment.

The Town of Larchmont and New Rochelle Fire Departments also responded.

The Town of Mamaorneck Building Department has closed the building at 2425 Boston Post Rd. until it deems it safe again. Collins said the American Red Cross would arrive shortly, but that everyone living in the apartment indicated that they had a place to go.

The Town of Mamaroneck Police Department opened Boston Post Road up to south-bound traffic around 8 p.m.
