Beau Biden Death Brings Attention To Battle Against Brain Cancer

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- The death of Vice President Joe Biden's son, Joseph "Beau" Biden III, Saturday night from brain cancer has cast a spotlight on a disease that kills about 15,000 people in the United States each year, according to a story in The Washington Post.

Officials have not disclosed the type of brain cancer that killed Biden 46, but the most likely is a glioblastoma, an aggressive cancer of the brain's supportive tissue, two experts said, according to the story in The Washington Post.

Biden first was diagnosed in August 2013 and went through surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, the story said. His cancer recurred this spring, and he began treatment again at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the story said

Nearly 23,000 adults, more of them men than women, will be diagnosed with primary brain cancers this year, according to Cancer.net, a web ite of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, whose members met for their annual conference, according to the story in The Washington Post.
