Car Club Brings First Car Show to White Plains

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - Tony Cifelli saw Charlie Hipp's 1932 Packard and two other vintage vehicles on display at 1 Renaissance Plaza on Wednesday and was immediately taken back in time.

Cifelli, a 25-year White Plains resident, was one of many to stop, in awe of the 1932 Packard, 1964 Cadillac DeVille and 1998 Harley Davidson, all of which will be part of the Westchester Antique Car Club's Car Show at the White Plains High School on Sunday.

"They're time machines," said Hipp, a White Plains resident who handed out fliers Wednesday for their club's first-ever Car Show.

The Westchester Antique Car Club is a regional division of the Antique Automobile Club of America, founded in 1935. The Westchester division has judged the Harbor Island Car Show in Mamaroneck since its inception more than 40 years ago. The club chose White Plains as the spot to hold their first Car Show because it was able to coordinate with the City and the Rotary Club of White Plains.

Hipp has been a member since the 1970s, while William Bailey, who owns the 1998 Harley Davidson, joined in 2006.

"With the way things are going, people forget about the history of the automobile, the evolution," Bailey said. "So it's good to see them around."

On Sunday, antiques, classics, hot rods and motorcycles will fill the high school's parking lot and be judged in various classes. Judging begins at noon, and the Best of Show will be awarded at 3 p.m.

Geoffrey Cullen, who owns the '64 Cadillac DeVille, joined the Antique Car Club in the 1990s, but has been collecting cars for years, including a 1961 and 1984 Cadillac and a 1950 Dodge pickup, he said.

Cifelli bought a 1957 Chevy Convertible when he was about 17 years old, he said. He later bought a powder blue 1956 Ford Sunliner that, "really drove the girls wild."

Registration for vehicles to take part in the Car Show is $10. Admission for spectators is $5; children under 12 are admitted free.
