Cat Adoption Day in Larchmont

Eva Fitch asked her dad Grover what a permanent home was as she pawed around with 15 Humane Society kittens and cats at Larchmont Floral Design's cat adoption day over the weekend.

"These kittens only have a temporary home now, and they're looking for a family to live with permanently," Grover told his eight-year-old daughter, who has expressed an interest in becoming a veterinarian.

Grover took Eva and her two brothers, William, 5, and Charlie, 2, to the combination flower shop and animal accessory store on Saturday, where they spent quality time with a two-year-old cat named Pumpkin. They didn't adopt her, but Beverly Press, events coordinator for the New Rochelle Humane Society, hopes the experience will bring them over to the shelter.

"This is the time of year when shelters are filled to capacity," said Press, who stood outside the Chatsworth Avenue store front answering questions about the event, which went from noon through 2 p.m. Saturday. "It's a good way to drum up publicity and get them to come over here."

The New Rochelle Humane Society houses 30 dogs and 142 cats, 31 of which are in foster care.

Although the Fitch family didn't take home a cat or kitten, all of which were nuttered and microchipped, three kittens did find new homes Saturday.

"That's the bottom line, and that's wonderful," said Larchmont resident Jackie Cooperman, who filled in for owner Liz Alfieri. Cooperman somberly recalled Pumpkin struggling with Humane Society volunteers Karen Roman and Joyce Holz as they tried to put her back into her cage. "Pumpkin did not want to go."

Monday was Pumpkin's 38th day in the cat-nip lounge at the New Rochelle Humane Society, where adult cats are housed. Canole, the other adult cat available for adoption Saturday, returned for her 13th day. Acoss the hall, the nine kittens who weren't selected played in the Humane Society's pink room.

The New Rochelle Humane Society will hold their 11th annual dog wash on July 17 outside their shelter on Potter Avenue.
