MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Some Fenimore Road residents had discolored water Wednesday due to complications with a water main valve replacement, said David Birdsall, business director for the Westchester Joint Water Works.
Residents who live on Fenimore Road between Palmer and Waverly avenues had their water shut down while workers replaced a leaky valve near Hoyt Avenue. But the shutdown took longer than expected, forcing them to excavate further into the road than they normally would to shut down the valves that control water flow from the main.
"The water discoloration is a common occurrence with any water main repair," Birdsall said. "Anything that causes turbulence in the mains causes some level of discoloration."
The WJWW received about six complaints of discolored water Wednesday, but can't tell how many homes were impacted.
The valve has been replaced and the water service in the area has been restored. There will be some residual discoloration, but it will eventually be clear.
"It can take a little bit of time for it to clear up in terms of discoloration," he said.
